The first audio original from Jeneva Rose, the author of blockbuster bestseller The Perfect Marriage, #CrimeTime is a full-cast mystery written with her husband, Drew Pyne, perfect for fans of Only Murders in the Building and Finley Donovan Is Killing it.

Going viral has never been so dangerous.

Nadiya loves her privacy: living alone and writing a popular series of crime novels under a pen name, she’s worked hard to build the quiet life she cherishes. But all that changes when her long-lost half-brother Chase comes to town, needing a place to stay until he can get back on his feet. Chase’s dream job is Nadiya’s worst nightmare: he’s an aspiring TikTok star, oversharing on the internet at every opportunity.

When a burglary occurs in the apartment upstairs, Chase decides to film and post all the action. Unbeknownst to him, this was not a random break-in but a targeted operation run by dangerous criminals. Chase’s videos go viral overnight, garnering millions of views and amassing a huge following of loyal #Chasers. It’s everything he’s ever dreamt of, except the attention has brought the wrong kind of heat. Chase and Nadiya are plunged into a world of organized crime, and together, they must uncover the truth and clear their names before they become the next victims.

Performed by a full cast and filled with both laugh-out-loud banter and shocking twists, #CrimeTime is a delightful romp through the murky, unpredictable realms of crime, family, and the TikTok algorithm.

INTRIGUING QUESTIONS. INQUIRING READERS WANT TO KNOW

Welcome to the third December #AuthorElevatorSeries with our very special fun and talented guests joining us for the first time! Welcome, New York Times bestselling author, Jeneva Rose and her husband Drew Pyne with their first highly anticipated co-written project, #CRIMETIME, inspired by a chilling, true life event, and first venture into the Audio Original genre. I loved #CrimeTime!

Welcome Jeneva & Drew!

Q. Give us your best ELEVATOR PITCH for #CRIMETIME.

A. Nadiya, a crime novelist and Chase, an aspiring TikTok star are half siblings who have recently discovered one another. The two of them witness an armed burglary in the apartment above them and shortly thereafter, discover their upstairs neighbor is a crime lord and one of the cops on scene is dirty. After Chase posts the videos detailing their findings to TikTok, they go crazy viral, plunging them into a world of crime that neither of them is ready for.

Q. DESCRIBE #CrimeTime in three words or less.

A. Hilarious, thrilling, and fun.

Q. INSPIRATION: The spark that ignited #CrimeTime. Where were you when the idea came to you and why did you decide to co-author and publish as an audio original?

Q. #CrimeTime is loosely inspired by true events. In December of 2021, Drew and I witnessed an armed burglary taking place in the apartment above our townhome. Three armed men broke into our stairwell and burglarized our neighbor, while we called the police and watched them through our peephole. After they fled and while we were stilling waiting for the cops to arrive, we decided to go up and check on our neighbor (as we didn’t know if he was home during all of this). It was then that we discovered our neighbor was a drug lord. There were still drugs and cash left behind as well as a cash counting machine and a ledger detailing his illegal business dealings. I phoned the police again and informed them of this latest development. This got their attention, and they arrived ten minutes later (forty-five minutes after my first call).

During all of this, I was documenting everything and uploading it to TikTok. The videos were gaining traction with many comments warning me of the danger I was putting myself in if my drug lord neighbor or the burglars came across my videos. I went back and forth between privating them (when I was scared) and making the TikToks public (when I was feeling brave). The drug lord was eventually evicted from the building, but it took Drew and I awhile to feel safe in our home again. However, that night stuck with me, and I knew there was a story there. It was months later that I came up with the idea for #CrimeTime, and then I asked Drew if he wanted to co-write it with me. We’d been wanting to write something together, and we thought this was the perfect project, since it was inspired by true events we experienced together.

Q. SETTING: Tell us more about the book setting and why you selected it.

A. #CrimeTime is set in West Chicago. Specifically, the Ukrainian Village, and that’s because that’s where we live and that’s where the true events occurred that inspired the audio original.

Q. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: Your favorite character to write, and/or most challenging?

A. Our favorite character to write was Viktor because he was so endearing, funny, and sweet. Plus, he owned his mistakes and was trying to be better.

Q. CHARACTER TRAITS AND INFLUENCES:

Despite being fictional, the characters in #CrimeTime bear an uncanny resemblance to Jeneva (Nadiya), Drew (Chase), and even Jeneva’s real father, “Papa Rose,” she has shared about on TikTok, traveling to her events to help set up the “book shows,” and proudly wears t-shirts of her bestselling books. (In #CrimeTime, Nadiya’s long-lost father, Viktor, has bought hundreds of copies of his daughter’s books). You also named a character in #CRIMETIME after Scott (Officer Scott), a disgruntled reader who has repeatedly emailed you about not liking her books (#ScottSaga). Fun, Fun!

Can you share how these characters, and their traits provide great fodder for writing, as well as a lens into how “art imitates life” and vice versa?

A. Everyone thinks Jeneva is Nadiya and Chase is Drew, but really there’s probably more of Jeneva’s personality in Chase and more of Drew’s in Nadiya, at least when it comes to handling traumatic situations. The night of the real burglary, Jeneva was the one cracking jokes (because that’s how she deals with traumatic or stressful situations) and filming the events of the evening, while Drew was the one that was much more serious and realized how dangerous the situation was. As far as Viktor, he was definitely inspired by Papa Rose, in terms of his humor and goofy personality. If the real Papa Rose was a crime lord and had Viktor’s wealth, he would absolutely build a bunker and deck it out like a lair.

Q. WRITING: Do you have a favorite chapter or scene in the book/audio you enjoyed writing the most?

A. Our favorite scene is when Viktor is first introduced.

Q. NARRATORS: What a great cast of stars narrating #CrimeTime! Were you pleased with the outcome and all the sound effects?

A. We were extremely pleased with the outcome, grinning ear to ear when we first heard it, especially the narration for Viktor, Chase, and Nadiya. The performances are so excellent and then when you layer in the sound effects, it just becomes that much better and truly brings the story to life.

Q. TAKEAWAY: What important message, theme, or takeaway would you like readers to be left with when listening to #CrimeTime?

A. We want our readers to experience total escapism and be completely entertained while listening to #CrimeTime and when they finish, we want them to think to themselves, “Wow, that was really fun.”

Q. UPCOMING: The million-dollar question: Can we expect a sequel, project, another co-written novel, or audio in the future by you two? These characters are too good to end! OR can you share what you are currently working on, or what is next in ten words or less (or more)?

A. We definitely ended the story the way we did on purpose to allow the characters to go on more #CrimeTime adventures. We had a blast writing the project together and would love to write a sequel if the opportunity is there.

YAY, more #CrimeTime Adventures. I must meet Papa Rose! He sounds like someone I want to hang out with!

Readers, get this gem on your TBR list, out Dec 12th!

A comedic thriller/cozy mystery, #CrimeTime is based on a real-life armed burglary Jeneva and her husband Drew witnessed in their Chicago apartment building, followed by the discovery that their upstairs neighbor was a drug lord. Complete with sound effects and performed in dialogue by a full cast, including actor & TikTok sensation Abelardo Campuzano and Tony Award-nominated actress Jennifer Damiano, it’s a delightful romp through the murky, unpredictable realms of crime, family, and the TikTok algorithm.

In the vein of recent bestsellers like Finlay Donovan is Killing It and The Maid, as well as hits like Only Murders in the Building and Knives Out, #CrimeTime is a mystery with laugh-out-loud humor at its heart. This lighter take on the genre, still delivering a satisfying puzzle of a plot with plenty of twists and turns, should appeal to a wide range of listeners, and be a delightful discovery for those who are turned off by the gore and violence of many thrillers.

My Review

New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Marriage, Jeneva Rose, returns with her first audio original, #CRIMETIME, a full-cast mystery co-written with her husband, Drew Pyne. This dynamic duo (TikTok stars) killed it with this hilarious cracker of a read, narrated by an entire cast of spectacular talent and super sound effects. Inspired by a chilling, true life event. Set in Chicago, we meet Nadiya, a popular crime writer who loves her privacy. She lives alone and writes under a pen name. Then her long-lost half-brother Chase (they met on an ancestry website site) comes to stay with her until he gets back on his feet. He is the polar opposite of Nadiya (introvert). He is an influencer (an aspiring TikTok star) and an extrovert. He needs to get his follower count up to make money. Chase has no filter and videos everything—oversharing it all! When a burglary occurs in the apartment upstairs, of course, Chase decides to film and post all the action. Of course, this was not a random break-in but a targeted operation by dangerous criminals and drug dealers. Chase posts the videos, which go viral, with millions of views and a vast following called the #Chasers. However, Nadiya is upset since she knows their life will now be in danger. She knows all too well about criminals due to her father. They now will be after the two. However, Nadiya and Chase's father may be able to redeem himself as he becomes involved in helping them. #CRIMETIME is a riot! What a fun, fun audio! I loved the banter between Nadiya, Chase, and the father and adored Viktor calling (the dog) his grandson. In addition to the humor and laugh-out-loud moments, there are other topics such as grief, loss, and trauma, since both the half-siblings lost their mother at an early age as well as the true-to-life trauma from the author's tragic experience. If you have watched/followed Jeneva and Drew on social media, you might see some similarities between the fictional characters and the dog. Yes, if you have heard of Scott (#ScottSaga), the disgruntled reviewer, there is also a character in #CRIMETIME named after him (Officer Scott), who may be a dirty cop. The husband/wife team has a significant following on TikTok and Instagram with funny videos and posts and their bulldog Winston. You can also buy merchandise! I love Jeneva's dad, a huge supporter. If you follow Jeneva and Drew on social media, you can get an idea of the fun and suspense coming in their latest collaboration! From humor, mystery, crime, suspense, and thrills—for fans of Elle Cosimano's popular Finlay Donovan series, The Maid by Nita Prose, and The Housekeeper by Freida McFadden. It is fun and lighthearted. INTERVIEW: A special bonus —Coming Dec 12th, Jeneva and Drew will be featured in my Dec #AuthorElevatorSeries Q&A with the partners in crime dynamic duo—where we go behind the scenes of #CrimeTime and these hilarious authors—it will be a blast! AUDIO NARRATORS: I loved the audiobook and the narrators: Abelardo Campuzano, Jennifer Damiano, Phil Thron, Gary Tiedemann, Peter Berkrot, P.J. Ochlan, Nancy Linari, Chris Andrew Ciulla, Piper Goodeve, Kevin R. Free, Samantha Desz gave an outstanding performance and loved all the sound effects. You will recognize these distinct voices and characters if you read as many audiobooks as I do. A special thanks to Wendy at Simon & Schuster Audio for an early listening copy. @JudithDCollins | #JDCMistReadBooks Pub Date: Dec 12, 2023 My Rating: 5 Stars Duration: 3 hrs. 37 min.
